AN ACT creating the Gettysburg memorial commission, authorizing the commission to negotiate for and procure a suitable memorial site and monument in the Gettysburg National Military Park in memory of its Civil War Heroes; and making an appropriation.
WHEREAS, Numerous civic organizations of Indiana whose objectives include preservation of our rich, historical American Heritages of which we are all so proud; and
WHEREAS, It has been a matter of public information and record that many states have established suitable memorials in Gettysburg National Military Park, Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, in memory of the men of their respective states fighting in the Civil War; Therefore
BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF INDIANA:
SECTION 1. A commission of five members is hereby created which shall be known as the Gettysburg memorial commission. The members of the commission shall be appointed by the governor and not more than three members shall be adherents of the same political party. In the first instance, one member shall be appointed for one year; one member for two years; one member for three years; and two members for four years. Thereafter all members shall be appointed for four years. All vacancies occurring in the membership of the commission for any cause shall be filled by appointment by the governor for the unexpired term. The members of the commission shall serve without compensation.
SECTION 2. The commission is hereby authorized and directed to negotiate for and procure a suitable and appropriate site and monument or memorial serving as an Indiana State Memorial in the Gettysburg National Military Park, Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, on behalf of those valiant men of Indiana who served, fought, and died in the successful struggle to save the Union during the Civil War.
SECTION 3. The sum of twenty thousand dollars ($20,000.00) is hereby appropriated out of any money in the general fund of the state treasury, not otherwise appropriated, to the Gettysburg memorial commission which shall be expended by the commission for the purpose of purchasing the site and memorial authorized by this act. The sum hereby appropriated shall continue available until the purposes for which the appropriation is made shall have been accomplished and completed.
