(2) The sculptor and consultant discussed the location of the monument on the chosen site. [Illegible words….] female figure holds the trumpet which faces the area where General Lee received Pickett’s troops returning after their disastrous charge. It also overlooks the site of Pickett’s charge. This blast of the trumpet would be heard by these men who took park in these actions where they [illegible]. The figure is “spirit” triumphant, symbolizing the survival of the spirit and ideas of these men… “that they did not die in vain.” The eternal flame, held in the other hand of the female figure symbolizes the memory of these gallant men. It is the embodiment of the spirit that went into the Battle of Gettysburg with them. The laurel tree which supports this symbolic figure is in two parts. One represents the North, one the South. It is now one tree trunk united by the dove of peace which has now come to the Battlefield of Gettysburg and to the nation. The patina or finish on the surface of the bronze was discussed from many [illegible] angles and will be examined and discussed further both by sculptor and consultant. Both the sculptor and consultant feel that the fact that the Louisiana Monument will be seen from the Administration Building and the Union Lines of the Gettysburg Battlefield and will be set dramatically against the row of trees which line the road leading to the late General Eisenhower’s Farm, that the patina must not only be effective by must wear well over the years. During the next months when the full size clay enlargement is being made the various technicalities will be studied further and recommendations be made. The Schedule of the sculptor is of great importance and to date has been maintained by the sculptor, Donald DeLue. Since the signing of the contract on December 5, 1968, he has been enlarging the 1st scale model to this 1/3rd sized model. The anticipated date of completion of the 2nd model was met on schedule, July 18, 1969. OFFICIAL APPROVAL RECOMMENDED: As consultant, based on this above report, I hereby recommend that the Commission immediately approve officially this 2nd model which is one 1/3rd (third) the size of the final monument.
