Captain Frederick W. Benteen (1834-1898), Washita Battlefield National Historic Site, 2016.
Exact photo date unknown but taken in the 1870s. Benteen is best known for commanding a battalion of the 7th Cavalry at the Battle of the Little Bighorn in June 1876. While scouting the area, Captain Benteen received an urgent note to join Custer in a surprise attack on a large Native American encampment. Benteen's failture to promply comply with the note is one of the most controversial aspects of the battle and resulted in the death of Custer as well as all of Custer's detachments which included five companies of cavalrymen.
