“In ancient times the heads were rudely hammered out of flint,” an unattributed 1870 Harpers Weekly article, “Making Arrows,” said, “but now they are made from hoop-iron and are of course much more effective.” Most likely made before Fort Union’s 1867 closure, this iron point that Fort Union archeologists unearthed substantiates the Harpers Weekly claim.
