Inscription: "Henry W. Longfellow / 1870." signed in ink verso by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (signature). Photographer stamp includes "Elliott & Fry / Copyright / 55, Baker Street / Portman Square. W. [London]." underneath image and verso. Thomas de Valcourt's instructions to return the photograph to the House have been erased.
Notes: 1868. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow sat for Fry by 23 July 1868 as he sent Julia Margaret Cameron one of their photographs of him (#2681, fn.2, Letters, ed. Hilen, V). The inscription indicates that he was giving these photographs in 1870. The Elliott & Fry stamp verso differs from the others so perhaps this carte-de-visite was produced slightly later.
Associated Materials: 3007-1-2-1-41 and -42 similar in pose.
