LIBI_00019_00497; This item is an original albumen photograph of a group of 6 people at the headquarters tent at the 7th Cavalry camp near Fort Hayes, Kansas with 4 additional tents and 1 soldier in the background. The photograph is 5 1/2 x 8 1/4" (8" x 9 7/8" mounted). As noted on page 81 of D. Mark Katz's book, the image was produced in 1869 and is attributable to W.J. Phillips of Preston, Missouri. The photograph is unevenly cut and has a tear in the upper right corner. Katz identifies the subjects, from left to right, as: unidentified 7th Cavalry trooper, Lieutenant George A. Custer, Dr. Dunbar, Mrs. Elizabeth B. Custer, Lieutenant Thomas W. Custer, Mrs. A.E. Smith and Mrs. Donald McIntosh. On the verso, a handwritten notation reads, "Gen'l Custer's headquarters camp/Camp near Ft. Hays Kansas" and is signed by Elizabeth B.
