Prairie Kingsnake (Lampropeltis calligaster)

A gray snake with alternating black spots on gravel road.

Ranging through most of eastern Kansas, this kingsnake inhabits rocky hillsides with open woods, and prairie grasslands. It remains very secretive, retreating down burrows or under rock when not actively prowling.
