California towhees live in the chaparral shrublands and other hot scrublands of California and Oregon. They are also common backyard birds that you may see challenging their reflections in windows or car mirrors, tapping against them. They hop around on the ground, staying close to the protection of low shrubs and trees. They eat mostly seeds from grasses and herbs, supplemented with insects during breeding season. They also eat berries such as elderberry and poison oak. They will perch on shrubs, rooftops, and backyard fences and utter a chirp for long periods.
