The image focuses on a brown eaglet fledgling who is perched on a thick branch that curves through the image like a sideways 'S'. The eaglet can be seen from a three-quarter view, looking towards the right edge of the image with its beak open. Sticking out of the beak slightly is the eaglet's pink tongue.
After an unsuccessful attempt to nest in 2006, a breeding pair of bald eagles returned to Cuyahoga Valley National Park in 2007 and successfully hatched and raised the eaglet shown. In the image, you can see the eaglet perching on a branch outside of its nest, exploring the world for one of the first times.
