A scene showing rocks surrounding a cave. On one of the rocks, a striped whipsnake is stretched out.
Like all snakes, striped whipsnakes (Masticophis taeniatus) are ectothermic, or cold-blooded. They rely on their environments for warmth. While they're typically elusive, sometimes they can be spotted, sunning themselves or hunting out in the open. While nonvenomous, they can be aggressive, so it's wise to keep one's distance.
