Within a circular tower, from a spiraling stairway, with a ceiling decorated with Ancestral Puebloan designs. Across the room, murals wrap around the circumference of the room. Through a circular parapet in the center, two additional levels are visible below.
Modeled after Ancestral Puebloan dwellings found at Hovenweep and Mesa Verde, the Desert View Watchtower was designed by Mary Colter and opened in 1932. The Second Gallery features re-creations of petroglyphs and pictographs from the Colorado Plateau. The ceiling images, painted by Fred Geary, are recreations of images from Abo Rockshelter, now part of Salinas National Monument in New Mexico.
