In a culmination of the reconciliation movement, the government of Maryland dedicated this monument on Antietam Battlefield honoring eight units of Maryland men--six in the Union army and two in the Confederate army--that had fought in the Battle on Memorial Day, 1900 || At the unveiling ceremony President McKinley, who had been a commissary sergeant in the Union army during the battle, ended his speech with a reference to the recent Spanish-American War where "the men of the South and the men of the North vied with each other to show their devotion to the United States."
