AIRMAIL
Mr. George W. Hill, Executive Director
Texas State Historical Survey Committee
112 East 18th Street
Austin, Texas
Dear Mr. Hill:
Your airmail letter of June 12 enclosing the inscriptions for the Texas memorial has been received and reviewed. From this review, we have found two or three small pints for discussion in the proposed text.
On line 11 of the text the word “south” should be substituted for the word “east”, since the Texas position was at the south of Devil’s Den after the retirement from Little Round Top.
The figure of 597 casualties is in error as applied to Texas troops, since the figure includes 142 casualties of the Third Arkansas Regiment.
The inclusion of Lt. Col. B. F. Carter’s name of the 4th Texas Infantry, is questionable, since the official record does not include this Colonel as a commander of that regiment. Also, if you intend to list names of all commanders of the brigade, the name of Lt. Col. R. S. Taylor of the Third Arkansas Regiment should be shown.
Your decision on the latter two points will be governed by your intention to include or to exclude the Arkansas Regiment from your memorial. We hope you will be able to come to an early decision on this and forward us a corrected text.
We will send the design and new text forward as soon as received, in order to get the most rapid possible approval from Washington.
Sincerely yours,
Kittridge A. Wing
Superintendent
