Tall green stems with bright purple flowers in foreground focus. Twigs and green grass in a flat plain to five large green bushes in progressive unfocus. Two hills and a pale hazy sky in the background.
'wahpe'h'eh'e, as the Lakota call it, or Rocky Mountain Bee Plant, is showing off its beautiful purple blooms right now in Agate's prairies and wetlands.
It was widely used by the Lakota as well as the Southwestern tribes such as the Navajo. It could be used as a salve for insect bites and other inflammation. The leaves and stems could be boiled down to make a black dye for pottery. And it could be eaten as a great source of Vitamin A and calcium.
