Genus Amanita
Mushroom with a white stem and a red cap with white spots
The Amanitas are usually easily recognizable, often having brightly colored caps, a white to off-white stem with veil remnants present as a volva or rings of tissue at the base of the stem and as warts or patches on the cap. Amanita muscaria (pictured) or the “Fly Agaric” can be easily recognized by its brightly colored cap which may range from yellow, orange, to deep red, and by its white warts. This species and other Amanitas are known to cause poisoning.
