Osborn Oldroyd (1842-1930), Lincoln Home National Historic Site, 2015.
Exact photo date unknown but was probably taken between 1888-1893. Pictured: Osborn Oldroyd, the Lincoln home's first official caretaker. In 1887, Robert Todd Lincoln heard that Oldroyd, who was renting the home at the time, had been charging admission while showing the home to the public. Robert, who wasn't fond of this arrangement, decided to sell the home to the State of Illinois for $1. His only condition was that it be kept in good repair and made free to all visitors. The state of Illinois appointed Oldroyd as the home's first caretaker.
