Gen. Robert E. Lee (left), upon completion of the terms agreement surrendering the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia to Lt. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant, ends the meeting with a handshake in the parlor room of the McLean House at Appomattox Court House, Virginia. Standing at the table to Lee's left is his military secretary and personal aide Lt. Col. Charles Marshall and Grant’s personal military secretary, Lt. Col. Ely Parker. They are joined in the room by (l-r): standing around the room are Lt. Col. Orville Babcock, Maj. Gen. Edward O.C. Ord, Lt. Col. Horace Porter, Capt. Robert Todd Lincoln, Lt. Col.
