Scene depicts the holiday event or celebration of July 4, 1867 held at Camp San Juan Island, today known as American Camp,
which hosted troops and civilian women and children from the English Camp to activities of picnicking, libations, horse racing, gunny sack races, and track-and-field events. Focal point of the illustration is the fenced in parade ground, buildings decorated with bunting, and celebrants from the joint American and British occupation forces and civilian women and children. The American Camp was occupied by the U.S. Army from July 1859 through November 1874.
