brass handbelll
A heavy cast brass bell reclaimed from the ruins of the Washington School fire, on display today at the Calumet Visitor Center.
Bells had many uses in a mining town. Bells were used in the mines as one of first forms of communication between miners underground and those working on the surface. Other uses were more widely known, such as at schools. This casted heavy brass handbell was first used at the Washington School in Calumet until the school was destroyed by fire in 1929. The bell was retrieved from the debris by Mr. Jon Buckett and repaired for use. Mr. Buckett continued to use the bell while refereeing hockey games in Calumet. Visit the Calumet Visitor Center to see the bell and to learn more about early Copper Country classrooms.
