An atomic bomb is detonated underwater in the lagoon of Bikini Atoll, Harry S Truman National Historic Site, 1946.
Tests to investigate the effect of nuclear weapons on warships, collectively called Operation Crossroads, was approved by President Truman in January 1946. Between 1946 and 1958, 23 nuclear devices were detonated at seven test sites on the reef, inside the atoll, in the air or underwater at Bikini Atoll. Prior to testing, residents initially accepted resettlement voluntarily to Rongerik Atoll believing they would be able to return home within a short time. Rongerik Atoll couldn't support all of the new residents, however, and many starved. They could not return home so were relocated to Kwajalein Atoll before choosing to live on Kili Island, a small island only 1/6th the size of Bikini Island. A trust was created by the United States government which has, as of 2013, covered medical treatment and other costs for islanders and paid about $550 annually to each individual. Pictured: this mushroom-shaped cloud and water column from the underwater Baker nuclear explosion of July 25, 1946 was captured from a tower on Bikini Island only 3.5 miles away.
