These women were a group of French-speaking domestics from Guadalupe in the Caribbean. They were on their way to jobs in French -speaking Montreal, Canada, and were kept overnight on Ellis Island before resuming their journey. They are standing outside the Restaurant in the Kitchen and Laundry Building on the Main Island.
