Close-up of the body and head of a green heron. Background is out of focus.
It must be the breeding season. This green heron has changed appearance to attract a mate and begin courtship. The beak has become a glossy black. The feathers between the eye and the beak (called “lores”) are turning from yellow to bluish-black. The eyes are becoming a deeper yellow and the colors of other feathers may get richer.
