Frances (Appleton) Longfellow to Emmeline (Austin) Wadsworth, 14 May 1847
Manuscript letter
Dearest love
Hoping every day to see thee I have not written what I should no longer delay telling you in some way. Mrs B. gives me reasonable hope from long experience for all I desire, & expect with joy unutterable, but also [crossed out: will] to my great disappointment declares herself engaged at a certain time [p. 2] I should take special comfort in having her with you & am therefore vexed this should be so but as it can’t be helped you must engage some one else without delay.
She recommends highly Mrs Tanner & a Mrs Bunting as a nice quiet person. Mrs John Jay had the former on one occasion, so perhaps you could find out indirectly about her in that capacity. [p. 3] I am writing by the study lamp, Henry having gone to a party at the Nortons. My cough still hangs on but is mending & if the weather will only mend I hope to have some nice drives with you next week.
Thine ever
Fanny L.
I was invited today to be one of three to decide on the prize poem for the Albany Female Academy & have my name paraded in their Report! What shall I do? Can I refuse? I hate the thought of accepting.
