Monk Seal Pup

A small monk seal pup covered in sand

In just 5-7 weeks, monk seal pups will go from 20 pounds to 200 pounds nursing from their mothers! If you see seals in Kalaupapa, or anywhere, give the moms and their pups plenty of space, and do not swim if they are on the beach. This photo was taken by a biological science technician whose monitoring and photography was conducted under NMFS Permit #22677. Photo was taken with a telephoto lens.
