Implement Phase Four of Redwood Creek Restoration at Muir Beach (Big Lagoon Project)

Phase 4 actions will alter visitor facilities to allow restoration of natural resources at the base of a watershed with high natural resource values. Actions include: rotating the visitor parking lot and picnic area out of the floodplain; constructing a new, improved lot and picnic area; installing a 215-LF pedestrian boardwalk/bridge over the floodplain for access to the beach (and connecting it with 220 LF of boardwalk/bridge previously installed in Phase 3); restoring about 1.4 acres of wetland/floodplain, and restoring foredunes at the beach, which entails both creating a new route to the beach and revegetating native dune species. The new 165-car visitor parking lot will be built using about 10,000 CY of fill from the old parking lot. Native soil excavated to build the new lot will be used to restore the floodplain. The parking lot, picnic area and trail will meet all accessibility requirements. The parking lot will be surfaced with asphalt and “miscellaneous” furnishings that support the desired park visitor experience will be installed, including 3 new accessible picnic tables, a shed for beach wheelchairs to match the new restrooms, 3 new benches, 440 LF of post-and-cable protective fencing on the perimeter of the parking lot, a 22-LF privacy screen near the bathrooms, and reinstallation of interpretive signage.
