A snow-dusted rock cabin, with snowy bushes surrounding it.
While fighting in Europe during World War I, a soldier named Bert Smith was exposed to poison gasses used during that war. Returning to the US with scarred lungs, Bert eventually moved to the Mojave Desert in the late 1920s. When Bert built his Rock House and started living in it in 1929, it was a desperate attempt to regain his health. Although he expected to survive only a short time, he lived there until 1954 – 25 years later! He later moved to a retirement home, where he passed away in 1967. Today, his rock house still stands near the trailhead of the Rock Springs Loop trail.
