Shrinking Ponds at Eielson Visitor Center: 1976-2005
A photo pair showing Shrinking Ponds at Eielson Visitor Center: 1976-2005
This photo pair shows a small pond and meadow area located on the bench above the Thorofare River west of Eielson bluffs and just south of the Park Road. The presence of standing water in this old pond feature in 2005 is surprising, because 2004-2005 were two of the warmest years on record for interior Alaska. This is particularly interesting due to the fact that the pond was apparently dry in 1976, and the main trend over the past three decades has been ponds drying and shrinking in boreal North America.
