Red maple (Acer rubrum) blooms, Effigy Mounds National Monument, 2015.
This common, widespread deciduous tree is best known for its deep scarlet fall foliage; however, its flowers, twigs and seeds are also varying degrees of red as well. It is adaptable to a wide range of habitats, found in swamps, on poor soils and almost anywhere in between!
