Below in left column text reads: “In 1863, Massachusetts formed the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry Regiment. It was one of the first units of black soldiers recruited during the Civil War. They were the first to fight in a major battle, where they charged a fort in South Carolina. The soldiers proved that black men could fight with bravery. Outline of Bunker Hill Monument obelisk and low Bunker Hill Lodge on full page in left column. Body of text reads "The Bunker Hill Monument took over 17 years to build. It is over 221 feet tall and is constructed entirely from granite blocks. Workers had to hoist and place each block one at a time. The monument commemorates the Battle of Bunker Hill. The battle took place during the American Revolutionary War on June 17, 1775."
