Black Rat Snake Portrait
The head and upper body of a dark brownish snake with black bands, moving through vegetation.
The black rat snake is the largest and one of the most common snakes in Cuyahoga Valley. It can occur in a range of colors and patterns, from very subtle to pronounced. Scientists are currently arguing over the taxonomy of the North American rat snake. How this group is divided into species and subspecies impacts their common names. You might also see our Ohio ones called gray or midland rat snakes. Confusing!
