Tablet Marking the Location of the Meeting Between Grant and Lee the Day After Lee's Surrender
LIBI_00019_00241; This item is a silver gelatin print postcard of a scene at Appomattox Court House. The postcard is 3 1/2 x 5 1/2" and was produced circa 1914 commissioned by A.L. Cheney of Morrisville, Vermont. This item is part of photographic series and on the front at the bottom center, a notation in blue ink reads, "No. 6." On the verso, a handwritten notation in blue ink reads: "Appomattox C.H./The tablet marks the spot where Grant & Lee met morning after the surrender. Just over the tablet can be seen on hillside in middle distance a corn field. At the edge of this by the Lynchburg Pike was the apple tree under which Gen. Lee was found by Col. Babcock when he escorted him to the McLean house to meet Gen. Grant. Lee's headquarters were at right on distant hillside just this side of the woods. Appomattox River, here but a small brook, is in the valley just beyond tall tree in middle of picture. The fence posts & fringe of bushes at extreme right of this picture in the foreground marks one side
