Barracks and Parade Ground at Fort Vancouver National Historic Site
During World War I, the site where Fort Vancouver once stood became the location of the Spruce Mill operations. Vancouver Barracks was the principal site of a unique and often overlooked outgrowth of World War I: the Spruce Production Division of the U.S. Army Signal Corps, an unusual alliance between Pacific Northwest lumber investment companies and the military. The Spruce Mill helped the war cause by producing badly needed lumber for airplanes and also facilitated the expansion of the Pacific Northwest lumber industry.
