The Role of Fire in the Forest Nutrient Cycle: diagram shows how forest fires recycle nutrients back into the soil regime and open up the forest canopy to increase solar input
Forest fires release nutrients, particularly minerals, back to the soil that have been “locked up” in standing timber Many of these are returned to the soil, but many also flow into bodies of water (streams, creeks, rivers, etc) At the same time, the loss of tree leaves and needles opens the canopy to enable more sunlight to penetrate the forest floor, where regenerating grasses, sedges, wildflowers, developing seedlings, etc can use it to boost the ecosystem’s biomass
