Amistad: Its Purpose and Goals
Amistad: Its Purpose and Goals. Amistad is a Black political, social, and cultural organization formed in the interests of the Black community of Richmond College and the surrounding area. White racism and paternalism is very much a part of American society. Therefore, we, the members of Amistad, maintain that in order to establish a Black identity and to develop true Black leadership, Amistad must exist at Richmond College. I The purpose for the existence of Amistad are as follows: A. To unify the Black students of Richmond College. "In unity there is strength". The Black students of Richmond College must be unified in order to assert the political power which is inherently theirs. This will be done via a program with common goals permitting us to work together. II B. Community involvement The members of Amistad must get involved with the Black community of Staten Island. The reason being that communal solidarity is necessary for political strength and because the rights and privileges of an individual rests upon the status obtained by the group to which he belongs. 1. Tutoring Programs 2. Student recruitment in Richmond 3. The support of community actions by Amistad C. To bring about total awareness of Black problems to our members. In order for Amistad to function as a dynamic organization, it's members must bring about total awareness of Black problems to ourselves, be they political, economical, social, or cultural: 1. Informal discussions 2. Black Studies programs 3. Guest Speakers 4. The disbursement of information on financial aid, scholarships, activities, etc.
