River crossing - Japan, 1872
Sepia photograph representing eighteen Japanese men standing in river and carrying a wooden platform on which a few men are sitting. The photograph is placed in the center of an album page decorated with a gold-leaf frame, colorful dots, and an inscription.
Six Japanese men, some wearing uniforms, are carried across the river at Odawara on a wooden platform carried by eighteen porters. Portions of the image have been hand tinted in shades of blue. | Inscription: "Ford at Odawara" in ink in block letters by Charles Longfellow. | Notes: 1871-1873 as given in inscription for first item in album. This photograph, identified as Felice Beato's, appeared in Italo Zannier's "Verso Oriente" (Florence, 1986).
