Increasing Vegetation on River Bars at Toklat River: 1958-2001
A photo pair showing Increasing Vegetation on River Bars at Toklat River: 1958-2001
*This description was written by teachers who visited the park in June 2012 to learn about communicating climate change. Looking southwest from the Toklat Bridge, there is an active riverbed in 1958. There is very little vegetation in the streambed. Approximately 40 years later, the active river channel has moved out of site of this photo (to under the bridge) and is being colonized by low lying vegetation. It has now taken on the role of a floodplain where sediment is deposited. It is important to note the bridge has limited where the water flows due to the road being built up which blocked the active stream channel, creating more of a floodplain environment. Little vegetation change has occurred on the distant slopes, but in 2012 there was a patch of poplars seen on site at the left edge of the spruce trees that is not apparent or noticeable in either of the photos.
