The American bullfrog (Rana catesbeiana) belongs to the family of 'true frogs', Ranidae. Easily identified by the tympanum, or eardrum, easily seen just behind the eye. Also notice the green upper lip, off-white under body and large brown irises with horizontal, almond-shaped pupils. This species is sexually dimorphic: males are smaller and have yellow throats. Males tympani are larger than their eyes, whereas tympani in females are about the same size as the eye.
