This is an historic black and white photograph from the Scotty's Castle Historic Photograph Collection, Death Valley National Park detail of one half of gate at Scotty’s Castle Stables. Gate hinged to rounded, mottled, stucco wall with flat wall behind. Gate is made of heavy, textured, vertical boards held with massive, handwrought, metal strap hinge. Hinge spans entire width of gate with stylized, desert animals. Heavy, handwrought latching system and pin at bottom to hold hate open.

Scotty’s Castle Stables Gate on west end, north side. Circa October 1929. Photographer probably Mat Roy Thompson. Redwood, carved vertical boards cut at various lengths to form curve at top. Hinged to red-tiled roofed stucco pier and wall extending from new section of Stables. Very large, stylized hand-wrought iron strap hinge spanning entire width of gate. At least 3 stylized animals incorporated into hinge design. Hand-wrought iron latch near top. Iron rod attached to gate near bottom edge leverage into dirt holds gate open. Hinges made by Julius Dietzmann’s Ironcraft Workers, Los Angeles. No marks. Black and white, vertical format.
