Anna Roosevelt Cowles
A half length portrait of a woman seated. There is writing in the upper left hand corner.
Anna Roosevelt Cowles (1855-1931), affectionately known as Bamie, was the paternal aunt of Eleanor Roosevelt. At the top of the photograph is the inscription, "For Eleanor Roosevelt by Bay Emmett, 1905." Auntie Bye, as Eleanor Roosevelt called her, was the eldest sister of Theodore and Elliott Roosevelt. Eleanor Roosevelt greatly admired her aunt and when FDR became assistant secretary of the Navy in 1913, Anna Cowles taught Eleanor Roosevelt the social rules and proper etiquette in Washington. Auntie Bye was one of the few women whom Eleanor Roosevelt admired for her independence and strength, and she spoke fondly of her aunt for the rest of her life. Anna Roosevelt Cowles died on August 25, 1931 at the age of 76.
