Deposition of Wm N. Woodard concerning Loyalty Ques 1 – I am 56 years old, a cooper by trade and live at Strasburg Va where I lived part of the time during the war when I was not compelled to leave to escape the rebels. 2 - I am in no way interested in the success of the claim. 53 to 56 – I have known the claimant since 1849. During the war he lived near me and we often met and [discussed?] on matters relating to the war and he was an genuine Union man all the time. He was formerly a slave of Capt Isaac Bowman. He was a shoemaker and a very industrious person: He used to work at his trade of nights and was very saving and in this way accumulated his property. 57 – When I was driven from my home by the rebels and was obliged to stay much of my time in the mountains his house was one of the places where I used often to go of night to get something to eat and to communicate with my family through him.
