In the late 1970s, staff modified two second floor porches by adding concrete decking to the porch roofs to shed water; these concrete features weighed more than 5,000 pounds each. Vertical cottonwood support beams were not tied to the building but resting on stones; One porch failed about 5 years ago and was propped back into place. In the fall of 2023, the porch at St. Vrain’s quarters began to fail, prompting closure of the second floor. These failed porches and the asbestos bearing concrete were removed in the summer of 2024.
