Marguerite "Missy" A. LeHand (1896-1941) was FDR's secretary from 1920 until 1941. Missy began working for Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1920 when he was running for vice-president with Governor James Cox from Ohio. She was hired as his personal secretary after Cox and Roosevelt were defeated and moved into the Governor's Mansion in Albany after FDR was elected governor of New York in 1928 and then to the White House with the Roosevelts in 1933. Missy was the most popular of Roosevelt's secretaries although she only made half of what his male secretaries made. Missy suffered a stroke in 1941 which ended her time as the president's secretary and Grace Tully became his personal secretary. FDR arranged for Missy to go to Warm Springs, Georgia for treatments and paid her medical bills. Missy died on July 31, 1944 in Massachusetts. FDR was off on a wartime trip when Missy's funeral took place but Eleanor Roosevelt did attend.
