Named for the Hog Island Shipyard, Philidelphia, Pennsylvania, these vessels were built as cargo or transport ships. They were built under government direction and subsidy to address a shortage of ships in the United States Merchant Marine during World War I. Of the 122 vessels built, only about half survived World War I.
