Robert's Redoubt was excavated August-November 1859 by a sapper team from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers under the command of 2nd. Lt. Henry M. Robert. The structure created alarm among British naval officers because it underscored the fact that the Americans intended to take permanent possession of the island.
