Dear Sir:
This office has received an inquiry regarding the presence of any Indiana State Monument in the Gettysburg National Cemetary. We would appreciate very much if you would let us know if our state is represented by a monument in your cemetary; and if there is no monument present, is it possible, at this date, for the State of Indiana to finance the erection of one. We would also appreciate any information relative to the limitations of size, cost, etc., should we be able to proceed with the erection of such a monument.
This inquiry, which was received, came from a member of the Indiana General Assembly; and it is a possibility that this gentlemen intends introduction of legislation, at the next meeting of our Legislature, to provide a monument in your cemetary, if one is not already present. The Historical Bureau of our State Library system has provided us with the information that this same subject came up for public discussion in 1913, but could not advise as to the outcome of that discussion.
Thanking you for any help you may give us in this matter, we remain
Very truly yours,
INDIANA WAR MEMORIALS COMMISSION
Carl C. Schmidt, Exec. Secy.
