Ranger Elaine Clark leads a tour, Andrew Johnson National Historic Site, 1965.
Elaine Clark, park ranger pointing at things as she guides visitors through the Andrew Johnson homestead in 1965. She worked at the site for 43 years! Description: On January 3, 1933, tours of the Andrew Johnson Homestead changed from self-guided to ranger-guided. This change was made to mitigate problems of artifact security and preservation but it also had the effect of allowing staff to better interpret the homestead for visitors. In the words of Superintendent Mark Corey, "The public should have the opportunity to listen to a formal presentation and then ask questions of a ranger in order to gain more interesting information than one can get merely reading a plaque." Ranger-guided tours of the Andrew Johnson Homestead continue to this day. #RangersPointingAtThings.
