American red squirrel (Tamiasciurus hudsonicus), Devils Tower National Monument, 2015.
This tree squirrel has several common names, including North America red squirrel, boomer, chickaree and pine squirrel. Easily differentiate this species from other North American tree squirrels by its smaller size, territorial behavior, typically-reddish fur and white underbelly. In general, it is small for a squirrel but somewhat larger than a chipmunk. Pine squirrels are similar in appearance to the Douglas squirrel. Differentiate the two by the Douglas squirrel's rust-colored underbelly and range, which is restricted to the Pacific Northwest of the US.
