Bust James A. Garfield
a white plaster cast of the top portion of President James A. Garfield
Material: Marble Style: Neo-Classical Artist: Preston Powers Date: 1883 On July 15, 1882 Lucretia and Eliza Garfield, the President's widow and mother respectively, viewed a clay bust of James A. Garfield made by Italian sculptor Preston Powers. According to accounts of the meeting, they proclaimed the bust to be "beyond criticism." Garfield's mother wept when she saw the sculpture because it was such a great likeness of her son. Powers would then use the clay model to sculpt a white marble bust a year later in 1883 and present it to Mrs. Lucretia Garfield. The original plaster cast and a bronze copy of the bust are now part of the collections at Hiram College.
