The photograph is 5 5/8 x 7 3/8" (8 x 10" mounted) and was produced in 1865 by an unknown photographer. On the front, a handwritten caption in pencil reads, "1. Father Custer/2. Gen. Jacob Greene/3. Mrs. Custer/4. 'Eliza'/Taken at Austin, Texas 1865." As noted on page 72 of D. Mark Katz's book, all of the subjects in the photograph are identified, from left to right, as: Charles Kendall, 2 unidentified men, Rebecca Richmond, Colonel Thomas W. Custer, Major General George A. Custer, Mrs. Elizabeth B. Custer, Eliza, father Emanuel Custer, Colonel Jacob Greene, and an unidentified man.
