Mioplosus labracoides eating a Diplomystus dentatus
An orangish fish fossil, facing right, eating another fish head-first on tan stone.
The mouth of Mioplosus, an extinct perch-like fish, was lined with numerous tiny sharp teeth. This aided in grasping prey, but also prevented them from expelling fish too big to ingest. The specimen is approximately 9 cm long and is in a private collection.
